Cartier family: Legacy and €53m controversy in Belgian industry

Cartier family

The de Cartier de Marchienne has its roots in the nobility of Liègea town renowned for its past steel industry where the family contributed to the industry, making their mark on the region by providing municipal leaders and a fortune of over 53 million euros.

Louis de Cartierknown as Baron Louis, played a leading role in the industrial landscape by becoming the boss of the multinational Eternit, thanks to its union with Viviane Emsens. This marriage thus linked two important industrial families and paved the way for Louis' career at Eternit, where he held the positions of Managing Director and then Chairman.

His personal life was marked by hardship, particularly during the Second World War, when he was captured and detained in a concentration camp while trying to reach England. Surviving this ordeal, Louis joined the Red Army, becoming a lieutenant before returning to Belgium after the war.

The family castle, Marchienne Castlebuilt near the river Sambre, still bears witness to the family's influence on the region. In addition to his responsibilities at Eternit, Louis was also involved in thehe management of Brepols, a renowned publisher, and Carta Mundi, a map production company.

However, the family's reputation was tarnished by the use of asbestos in Eternit products and the tragic consequences for health. Louis de Cartier and his associates were put on trial in Italy for their role in processing this harmful material. In 2012, at the age of 90, Louis was sentenced to sixteen years' imprisonment by an Italian court, although he died before his appeal was heard.

The family's destiny was also overshadowed by personal tragedies, such as a devastating fire on their estate during an equestrian camp, costing the lives of several children.

The story of Louis de Cartier de Marchienne remains a tale of resilience, entrepreneurial success and controversy linked to issues of public health and environmental impact.
