Justin Onclin: From Vine to Real Estate, an Empire of 49 Million Euros

Justin Onclin

Justin Onclin is a prominent figure in Belgium, recognized primarily for his expertise in the wine industry. His company, Sovex, founded in 1981, has rapidly established itself as a key player in the wine distribution market. In collaboration with New Caledonia's Ballande group, Onclin acquired Château Prieuré-Lichine in Margaux in 1999, just before a major rise in Bordeaux vineyard land prices.

This shrewd investment approach has paid off, consolidating its reputation in the wine industry. In addition to Château Prieuré-Lichine, Onclin also owns the Château Branas Grand Poujeaux in Moulis-en-Médoc and Château Villemaurine, each covering twelve hectares of vineyards. The Onclin family has a fortune of over €49,279,270.

As he diversified his investments, he also attempted to revitalize the Val-Saint-Lambert crystal glassworks, although this venture was not as successful. In the field of culinary publications, Onclin acquired the famous Gault & Millau, placing his friend Steve Stevaert at the helm of this institution.

Onclin's interest in real estate took center stage with several notable projects. The Stadshaven project in Hasselt, in which the Onclin family invested 18 million euros, includes a 62-apartment residential complex and a large retail outlet. This mission is now managed by his son, Philippe Onclin, from their base in Hasselt. Philippe is in charge of the real estate division of the Onclin Group, while his sister Carmen manages the wine business in France.

Other prestigious real estate projects include the Hassaporta residence near the Kanaalkom at Hasselt, comprising 147 apartments. These projects testify to the Onclin family's expansion in the real estate sector, alongside their investments in wine. For example, the Onclin Group continues to diversify and prosper under the leadership of the new generation.

Justin Onclin's career shows an astute combination of investments in diverse fields, from wine to crystal to real estate, each project a testament to his ability to identify and develop lucrative opportunities. This reflects a strategic vision that formed the basis of his fortune and continues to influence the success of his children in their respective businesses. Justin Onclin has succeeded in creating an estate worth over 49 million euros for his family.
